About the Project

PennDOT is developing a long-term, multi-phase infrastructure project to upgrade the Interstate 78 corridor in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

The I-78 Reconstruction Project will improve traffic flow and safety of the traveling public on approximately seven miles of I-78 over the next decade, from the Berks County line in Weisenberg Township and continuing into Upper Macungie Township. The project will include a new interchange with Adams Road and will modify the Route 100 interchange.

This section of the I-78 corridor is vital because it connects local neighborhoods, manufacturing and shipping warehouses with the rest of the Lehigh Valley, and to the greater mid-Atlantic Region beyond.  The Lehigh Valley Planning Commission expects future development along this corridor to bring more homes, manufacturing, warehouses and commercial investments, which will increase the number of vehicles of all sizes on the network of roads and highways in this area.

What’s Included in the Project:

  • Adding an eastbound lane to I-78, west of Route 863
  • Adding a third lane to both eastbound and westbound I-78, east of Route 863
  • Replacing the Kecks Road bridge over I-78
  • A new interchange with I-78 at Adams Road
  • Modifying the Route 100 interchange

These improvements will support increased traffic and make travel safer, serving the community well into the future. The project is currently in preliminary design through 2026 and will be in final design through 2029. Portions of the project, including the new interchange with Adams Road, will begin construction in early 2030. The remainder of the project will be completed in phases over the next 5 to 7 years. The I-78 Reconstruction Project is fully funded through a combination of state and federal funding.
